How to Apply for a Student Visa

To get a student visa in Australia, you must meet some requirements. Don’t get overwhelmed, YouTooProject will guide you through each of the documents you need to apply for the visa. Here are the requirements you must meet:

  1. Enroll in a course. As mentioned earlier, you can study an English course or vocational training. To apply for the visa, you must have already enrolled in a course and present the CoE (Confirmation of Enrollment) provided by the school.
  2. Be of legal age. You must be over 18 for us to help you apply for your student visa. If you are not yet of legal age, don’t worry! You can start gathering all the information to travel once you turn 18.
  3. Have health insurance. You will need to get health insurance (OSHC, Overseas Student Health Cover) that covers your entire stay in Australia, from the day you arrive until the day you leave. We will help you get it quickly and easily.
  4. Have a passport with at least 6 months of validity.
  5. Pay the visa fee. You’ll need to pay 1,600 AUD, which is the cost of the student visa.

How long does the student visa take?

Visa approval times depend on your nationality and the volume of requests at the time. On this government website, you can check the estimated processing times. 25% of visas are approved within 7 days, while the other 75% can take an average of 29 days.

How many hours can you work in Australia with a student visa?

With a Student Visa in Australia, you can work 48 hours every two weeks (24 hours per week) while studying and 40 hours per week during your vacation periods. This is enough to save and travel around the country!

Can I travel with my partner?

Yes! The Australian student visa allows you to include your partner in the visa application. To do this, you must meet specific requirements. Once approved, both of you will be able to study and work in Australia. The only difference is that the partner can work a maximum of 20 hours per week throughout the stay, while the primary applicant can work 40 hours a week during their school holidays.

How long can I stay in Australia?

This depends on the duration of your course:

  • If your course lasts less than 10 months: you can obtain a visa to stay 1 month beyond the duration of your course.
  • If your course lasts 10 months or more and ends between January and October: you can stay in Australia for 2 months after your course ends.
  • If your course lasts 10 months or more and ends between November and December: you can get a visa valid until March 15 of the following year.

Work & Holiday Visa in Australia

Another option to travel to Australia is the Work & Holiday Visa (subclass 462), which allows you to travel throughout Australia for 1 year and work at the same time.

However, keep in mind that you cannot work for the same employer for more than 6 months. You can also study for a maximum of 4 months!

What requirements must I meet to apply for the Work & Holiday visa?

The first thing to consider is that not all nationalities are eligible for this visa. You will need a valid passport from one of the following countries: Argentina, Spain, Chile, Ecuador, China, Peru, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, the USA, Vietnam, or Austria. To apply for your visa, you must also consider the following:

  1. Age: You must be between 18 and 30 years old when applying for the visa. If you are 30 when applying but 31 when traveling, no worries! You will still be able to enter the country with your approved visa.
  2. Not having previously entered Australia with a Work & Holiday visa (subclass 462) or a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417).
  3. You must apply from outside Australia.
  4. Have an English certificate showing at least a B2 level.
  5. Financial solvency: It may vary, but they usually ask you to prove that you have 5,000 AUD.
  6. Educational background: You must meet a minimum education level, which varies depending on your nationality. Check it out here!

Besides these general requirements, depending on your country of origin, you may be asked for additional documents, like a support letter if you’re from Ecuador or Peru or medical test results. You can visit the official government website to verify the requirements based on your nationality.

How much does the Work & Holiday visa cost?

This visa costs 650 AUD.

When should I apply?

From July 1 of each year, you can apply for your visa, as this is when new spots open (if the previous ones haven’t been filled, you may apply before this date).

Keep in mind that the government grants a limited number of visas, and this varies by country. For example, Argentina, Chile, and Spain are offered 3,400 spots; Peru is offered 1,500; Ecuador is offered 100 spots, and Uruguay is offered 200 spots.

Tourist Visa

If you are thinking of spending a few months in Australia to explore the country, you are likely considering a tourist visa. There are many options! We’ll tell you about some of them so you can choose the one that best suits your plans.

Keep in mind that with these visas, you cannot work during your stay. However, they do allow you to study a course that lasts less than 3 months.

Visitor Visa (subclass 600)

Conditions of the Visitor Visa (subclass 600):

  • Generally, it allows you to stay in Australia for 3 months, although you can request a stay of up to 12 months.
  • The visa fee is 145 AUD.
  • The government may ask for health checks, biometric exams, or police certificates.
  • Application time: It can take between 15 and 90 days for approval.

Evisitor Visa (subclass 651)

Conditions of the Evisitor Visa (subclass 651):

  • It allows you to stay in Australia for 3 consecutive months within a 12-month period.
  • It’s free!
  • Application time: very fast! It can take between 1 and 30 days.

Please note that for both visas, you must apply from outside Australia. Visit the official government website to check if you meet all the requirements.

  • Skilled Visa: This is offered by the government to workers with in-demand occupations.
  • Graduate Visa: A temporary visa that allows international students in certain fields to live, study, and work after completing their studies. It is more complicated to obtain because the required studies are limited.
  • Temporary Skill Shortage Visa: Commonly known as a Sponsor Visa, it requires an Australian company to prove that they want to hire you over an Australian citizen. Though difficult, it’s not impossible!
